2月23日(3月16日)、五代はデュプレックス号(La Dupleix)の艦長アベル・デュ・プティ=トゥアール(Abel du Petit-Thouars)を初めとする20人ほどのフランス人を妙国寺に案内した。割腹は午後4時から始まったが、11人目が終ったところでトゥアールは五代を呼び、処刑の中止を申し出た。トゥアールは五代を伴ってヴェニュス号で待機していた仏公使レオン・ロッシュ(Léon Roches)のところへ行き、残る9人の処遇について裁可を仰ぐ。
Eleven Samurais of the Tosa Clan committed suicide by “seppuku” at the Myokokuji Temple of Sakai, in order to take responsibility for the deaths of eleven french sailors. Godai Tomoatsu witnessed the “seppuku” with the captain of french corvette Dupleix, Abel du Petit-Thouars.
森鴎外の『堺事件』では、堺町を警護していた土佐藩兵が発砲したのは、仏水兵の暴慢な振る舞いがためとなっている。一方、死傷者を出した仏艦デュプレックス号(La Dupleix)の艦長アベル・デュ・プティ=トゥアール(Abel du Petit-Thouars)によれば、彼らは測量をしていただけであり、うち2名が仏人上司の許可を得て防波堤を散歩していた際突然武装した集団に取り囲まれ、その後銃撃戦が始まったとしている。伊達宗城も、五代らの報告により、仏人による乱暴などはなかったと捉えていたようだ。
Ten French sailors and one officer were killed at the port of Sakai, by Samurais of the Tosa Clan in 8 March 1868. Godai Tomoatsu made every exertion in order to solve the incident.
